Basic Downloading (101)
A Beginners Guide To Downloading Off The Internet!

Downloading is a very basic and necessary computer skill.
If you have a computer and an internet connection, then
you can Download off the Internet!

If you are new to computers or to the Web, and have not done any
Downloading yet then this article is for you!

Downloading over the Web is, strictly speaking is simply the transfer
of a file or files from one computer to another.  You may not realize
it but as you surf the Web you are constantly downloading files into
your computer. Every Web page that you view, the pages and all the
images that you see are downloaded into your Browser's cache.

When downloading a file or a program over the Web it happens
a little differently than viewing a Web Page. These files are designed
to transfer directly to your computer, with no viewing in your browser.
These files can be of many different types, they can be Shareware
Programs, Patches and Upgrades for your Software even Books,
Movies, Music....all sorts of fun stuff are offered by download.

Literally Billions of files are downloaded off the web every day!

The first time that you do a download it can be a little spooky at first!
Mainly because you don't know what to expect, below you will find a
basic step-by-step of what you can expect to happen when you click
on a "Download Here" link and commence the file transfer.

You will find, with a little experience, that downloading is really
quite a simple and straightforward process!

Please note that the screens that you see on your computer
will most likely differ somewhat from what is shown below!

Shown below is:
Netscape 4.04 & Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
both running on Windows 95.

Netscape

1. When you click on a link that starts to Download a File the first screen that you see should look something like the image below.  This will gauge your Download progress, our Packages generally take 10 to 20 min. each depending on your connection speed.

netsmeter.gif (3631 bytes)

2. When the Download is complete, the next screen you will see will ask you Where you want to Save the Downloaded File in your computer.

!  Be sure to Save it somewhere that you will be able find later!
If you are not sure Where to Save the file, Save it right on your Desktop.

saveas.gif (16660 bytes)

3. When you Save it your are done!

MS Internet Explorer

1. When you click on a link that starts to Download a File the first screen that you see
should look something like the image below.

!   Select - "Save This Program To Disk".
DO NOT Select - "Run This Program From Its Current Location"

iesave.gif (29010 bytes)

2. The next screen you will see will ask you Where you want to Save the Downloaded File in your computer.

!  Be sure to Save it somewhere that you will be able find later!
If you are not sure Where to Save the file, Save it right on your Desktop.

3. Then you will see the Download Meter, this will show your Download Progress. Our Packages generally take 10 to 20 min. each depending on your connection speed.

iemeter.gif (4402 bytes)

4. Internet Explorer will tell you when the Download is complete. That's it, you are done the Downloading!

Problems Downloading Can Indeed Happen!
Although downloading is a simple, straightforward and generally
a very routine process...on occasion problems can occur.

1. By far the most common problem that we get ask about is, "I am sure I downloaded the pack...but I can't find it now!"  You have lost it somewhere on your computer.

First, check in 'My Documents" or "My Downloads" on your computer. You can also do a "Find Files or Folders" search on your computer, type the name of the file: Oak, Landscapes, Celtic1 etc. that you downloaded and it will generally do a pretty good job at finding it for you.

Or you can just re-download the pack and....
!  Be sure to Save it where you can find it later...like right on your Desktop.

2. Please "Keep it Simple"!
Please don't try to download your Packages to a Floppy Disk or other Removable Disk. Download it right to your Hard Drive (
on your Desktop) you can always move the Package later if you like.

3. Downloading at-work can often be problematic!
If you are having problems downloading at your office or work-place talk to the 'computer-person' at your office, or download your Packages on your home computer.

4. Stalling-Out.
You are in the process of downloading and it just seems to slow down then stops. This stalling-out can happen for any number of reasons, the most common cause being that your connection to the package becomes "stagnant" or "un-stimulated".

Your Internet connection works best when there is a lot going on.  If your download seems to have stalled-out...check your mail, this will often "stimulate" your internet connection a little and many times will get the download going again.

Our packs are really quite small compared to much that is downloaded off the web (many programs and such can take many hours to download!) so this stalling-out problem should
not happen very often.

Try a different browser! For example, Netscape is well known to be far superior at downloading off the web than MS Internet Explorer.

You can also try again later to download your pack.  Try a quiet time on the web, very late at night, after midnight or early in the morning, say, before eight.  If you continue to have this stalling-out problem after you have tried several times, it is time to call your Internet Service Provider's Tech-Support line and tell them the problems you are having.
Your connection to the internet may be unusually slow, faulty, miss-configured or otherwise problematic.  Your Internet Service Provider can often diagnose and fix the problem
quite easily!

5. Please resist the natural temptation to blame us for your downloading difficulties!
Please understand that as much as we would like to be able help, we have absolutely no control over the speed and or the quality of anyone's internet connection.  Your ability to download off the internet is your responsibility, and is completely beyond-our-control.
