Working With Your Patterns

First lets start by defining exactly what our patterns are.

All of our patterns are computer images and are in what is called ".JPG" (Pronounced JAY-PEG) format. This image file format (.jpg) is a universal file format, meaning they can  be read by all Windows and  Macintosh systems, and that they can be read or viewed in virtually all Image Editing Programs known to man.  Our patterns are not printed on paper, and mailed to you.

You may not know it but you are viewing .jpg images right now, the logo at the top of
this page is a .jpg, the wood background on this page is also a .jpg image. These are being read by your Web Browser.

iamajpg.jpg (7440 bytes)

As an example the image to the left is a .jpg image.
And if you  Click Here  you can view a .jpg image without a web page. You can see that you can view a .jpg without it being a part of a web page.

What Is Downloading?

What Our Patterns Are Not:

Patterns are not Pre-Printed on Paper.

Patterns are not Plans!
Patterns do not contain any woodcarving instructions,  woodburning instructions,  egg carving directions,  glass etching-carving instructions,  leather work lessons,  laser carving directions, scrimshaw instructions,  power carving techniques,  metal chasing-engraving instructions, painting directions,  tin punch or piercing instructions,  gun stock carving lessons,  paper cutting techniques,  intarsia instructions,  gourd burning-carving lessons,  embroidery instructions, cross stitch lessons,  fret saw directions,  scroll saw lessons or any
step-by-step instruction manuals....and so on.

Patterns are not Vector Format images.

We highly recommend the use of your favorite
Image Editing Program
to realize the full potential of your patterns!

1. How do I view and print my patterns?

The most basic way to view and print your patterns is by using your Web Browser. Once you have Downloaded and Opened your packages you will have a file filled with a whole bunch of image files, these are your patterns. You can use your Browser right on
your computer (you don't connect to the web) to open your patterns.

icon.jpg (912 bytes)

icon2.jpg (916 bytes)

On many Windows systems your images should look something like these.
(If they don't look like these... please don't panic!)

2. How come when I print my patterns only a portion of the pattern  prints?

Many of our patterns are sized extra large to give you plenty of pattern to work with, for the most part these larger patterns are not designed to print on a single 8.5" x 11" piece of paper. This large size has many advantages, many folks will need a larger pattern for a larger project, and perhaps use, say, 4 sheets of paper to print one single pattern. Then tape the sheets together to form one larger pattern ready for tracing.

The larger patterns are much more versatile then smaller images could ever be.

It is always much easier and the results much clearer and detail crisper to reduce the size of a large pattern then it is to enlarge the size of a small pattern.

measeagle.jpg (13063 bytes)

The eagle pattern on the left is typical of one of our larger patterns. If you were able to print it straight from the package and paper size and the printer were large enough it would measure roughly 10"x 16"

papereagle.jpg (6606 bytes)

Without re-sizing the image you can print most of this pattern using 3 standard sheets of paper. Many printers will give you
the option to print spanning several sheets of paper.

paper2eagle.jpg (14828 bytes)

Or,  again without re-sizing the image you could use 4 sheets.

2a. What's all this about "re-sizing" the pattern, how do I do this?

At this point we must discuss....Image Editing Programs.

We highly recommend the use of your favorite
Image Editing Program
to realize the full potential of your patterns!

Folks that have and use  Image Editing Programs simply re-size our patterns to suite their needs, whether it be to make larger, smaller, mirror, flip, rotate, cut the pattern up into separate pieces and then rearrange the pieces to form a completely new pattern.

Re-sizing is a very simple and basic function of an Image Editing Program.

A Few good Image Editing Programs (there are of course many others!)

Paint Shop Pro An excellent Image Editing Program! Easy to learn and use and very reasonably priced. Very powerful and large assortment of tools. They also offer free downloads of the program to try out!

Adobe Photo Deluxe Another good Image Editing Program. Very easy to learn and use, not nearly as powerful as Paint Shop Pro, but a good "beginner" type of program.  It is very often given away free many times with your printer software (check the CD it may be right there!).

Adobe Photoshop The "GranDaddy" of Image Editing Programs. Very powerful and very expensive! Recommended for advanced users or for folks who really want the very best when it comes to Image Editing Programs.

Also though not true Image Editing Programs, and far from ideal
some of these types of programs may work as well.
Greeting Card making type of Programs
Brochure Making Programs
Banner Making Programs
Desktop Publishing Programs
Microsoft Publisher
Word Processing Programs
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Paint

Lets look at just a few basic things you can do with our patterns
using a Image Editing Program

resizeagle.jpg (10132 bytes) Re-size the example eagle pattern, now it will print on a single 8.5"x11" sheet of paper.
eaglemir.jpg (9366 bytes) Mirror or flip the eagle to face the opposite way.
doubleagle.jpg (12443 bytes) Combine right and left facing to form a new pattern.
eaglehead.jpg (12549 bytes) Need a close-up of just the head no problem using a Image Editing Program, and yet another new pattern is formed.

The eagle serves as an example only, if you look through our patterns you will see many that would be much more suitable for the mirroring, flipping and combining. Lets take two different patterns and put them together to form a completely new pattern.

smexample.jpg (6495 bytes) smexample2.jpg (6821 bytes) Using these two patterns.
combpattern.jpg (14137 bytes) To form one large and new pattern!
Use you imagination! There are just so many
possibilities in what you can come up with!

We highly recommend the use of your favorite
Image Editing Program
to realize the full potential of your patterns!

We hope this tutorial has served to give a brief overview
as to what our patterns are, and some of the things that you can do with them.
We always welcome your feedback and questions, if you have an area that
you would like to see discussed please drop us a note!
